What were they thinking?

Good grief. This was all over the adoption boards yesterday and today. NBC is airing a show tomorrow called America's Favorite Mom. The show is sponsored by Teleflora and was promoted heavily on The Today Show, which held a contest to recognize moms in different categories: Working Mom, Military Mom, Single Mom, COE (Chairman of Everything Mom) and the Non-Mom category. Who might be in that NON-MOM category, you ask? Well, that's described as "a grandparent, stepmom, or mom to adopted children, each one raising and loving a child."

Hmm....so adoptive moms are non-moms, huh? We're not real? Funny, I feel real. I feel very real this weekend while she's sick and I'm snuggling with her. I feel very real when I pack her lunch every day and read her books. I feel real when I worry about her and when I'm saving for her college education. Tell me what a "real" mom is. ALL MOMS ARE REAL...some just become mothers in ways other than giving birth. If they wanted to call this category the non-birthmother category, I'd be all fine with that, but don't call me a "Non-Mom". I bet there are lots of other grandparents, stepmoms, and adoptive moms who feel very real too.

Apparently, NBC and Teleflora were swamped with calls and emails yesterday. Now, the category is "Adopting Moms". You can read about it here. What's interesting is that the President of Teleflora is an adoptive parent, as is Marie Osmond, hostess of the show. I don't think I'm too interested in watching. I'll be busy doing real mommy things with my two very real daughters.
